CSM Targoviste is the only romanian women basketball team that ever played in the highest professional basketball league in Europe for women’s clubs, Euroleague. Proud of having and seeing my hometown team playing against the best of the best I didn’t miss the chance to photograph their european adventure that started home on the 24th of october 2012 with a match that was decided 5 seconds before the final whistle by Laura Macchi’s perfect three points throw. Municipal Targoviste lost 75 to 76 against italian team Famila Schio.
Municipal Targoviste couldn’t prevent a heavy defeat in Turkey against Fenerbahce (48-73), but a defeat is not bitter if you don’t swallow it. The girls must learned their lessons, so they came back home and won dramatically against russian team Nadezhda Orenburg (79-76).
After losing two matches, the romanian team completed three wins in a row slayering home Nadezhda Orenburg, away UE Sopron (87 -82) and then back home the french team Arras Pays (72-64).
The romanian fans based in the small city of Targoviste started to dream big, but a black period was about to come. Municipal Targoviste lost the next 2 away matches against Good Angels Kosice 78-93 and Famila Schio 62-66. The black period continued with losing home against Fenerbahce Istanbul (60-89).
The fourth defeat in a row happend in Russia, Nadezhda Orenburg won 71-68 after a dramatical match. Municipal’s girls couldn’t find their way so they also lost the next home match against UE Sopron even the romanian fans created a hell in the Sports Hall of Targoviste.
Losing for the sixth time in a row in France against Arras Pays, the romanian team was seeking for a desperate home win in the last group stage match to proceed to the next round of the competition, the playoff before the Last 8. The visitors Good Angels Kosice already secured their group first place so Municipal Targoviste took the advantage of the situation and won (72-64) for a historical qualification to the next stage.
The first and the last (until now) participation of a romanian women basketball team in Euroleague ended after two meetings with the multiple winners of the competition Spartak Moscow.
